Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) has become the first airport in Italy to earn IATA CEIV Pharma certification, obtained in a community approach together with its air cargo supply chain partners.

Cargo business at Fiumicino airport closed 2018 with a growth of 11% compared to 2017, brushing the 200,000 tonnes milestone.

A spokesperson said that a “significant portion” of the traffic included pharma products, which travel primarily to and from North America, but also to the Far East and South America.

Fausto Palombelli, chief commercial officer of Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), the managing company for the Rome airport system, said: “The Lazio pharmaceutical district, the second largest in Italy and one of the major European production hubs, is growing constantly. Therefore, the development of Fiumicino as a cargo traffic hub is a driving force for the economy of the territory and the entire country system.

“This certification is a testament to the commitment and the proactive role of Aeroporti di Roma in the economic development of the supply chain.”

The CEIV Pharma certificate was presented by IATA’s head of cargo, Glyn Hughes, to ADR at the Air Cargo Europe event in Munich.
