Interviewing Lufthansa Cargo CEO Peter Gerber on stage at the World Cargo Symposium 2016 in Berlin. Yes, it does look like I have an aircraft coming out of my ear.

I returned to Air Cargo News after a break of 27 years, taking the left hand seat of the world’s number one air cargo title.

It was strange to be back where I started in trade journalism, but it was an eventful period, catching up on the airfreight industry and travelling the world again, mainly to the big air cargo conferences.

I suffered a serious illness in 2014, deep vein thrombosis, but survived and decided to recruit Damian Brett, who would lead the social media strategy and collate the data on freight rates, always popular in print and now online.

I enjoyed writing the news and features, but we had to go though a total redesign for Air Cargo News from a tabloid to a magazine format, and a change in frequency from fortnightly to monthly. There was also a redesign for Freighters World, our quarterly magazine for the all-cargo aircraft sector.

I picked up the Air Cargo Journalist of the Year award in 2017, for my in-depth feature on animal trafficking, an issue close to my heart because of the terrible suffering we humans can impose on other species.

A long commute, some four hours a day, and a desire to focus on interviewing and writing, (which is why I became a journalist) made me decide to go freelance.

I left as Air Cargo News’ new look conference and awards proved a great success, commercially and editorially, due to the efforts of the entire team, not least Damian Brett, who has stepped into the role of editor. The title is in good hands.

And so now, I am a freelance and looking forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.
