Roger Hailey is an award-winning journalist specialising in the world of logistics, across all modes of transport: air, ocean, road and rail.
Roger started his career in journalism at Heathrow airport in 1977, working for the Brenard Press news agency, where he progressed from newsroom trainee to airside reporter.
Interviewing celebrities of the day was the main task, be it Paul McCartney, the Osmonds, Alice Cooper or Bruce Forsyth, plus observing politicians such as Harold Wilson, James Callaghan and Margaret Thatcher (one of Maggie’s bodyguards elbowing the young hack in the stomach).
From airside to landside as the editor of Skyport, the Heathrow staff newspaper, and then as a local reporter at the Richmond & Twickenham Times.
From Rich & Twickers, via the Bromley Advertiser, to his first stint on Air Cargo News, followed by a decade at International Freighting Weekly (IFW), six years as editor, and then to Lloyd’s List with numerous senior roles over 17 years, including news editor, Brussels correspondent, logistics editor and then two years as editor of Containerisation International (CI).
From CI, Roger returned to ACN after a gap of 27 years, becoming the editor for five years before deciding to turn freelance in May 2019.
Technological revolution for ACN: It’s a fast-moving world – and journalists have to keep up. Former Air Cargo News editor Roger Hailey reports on the changing world of publishing over the past 40 years. Click here to read my account.
