United Airlines has introduced a three-times weekly cargo service between Dublin and its Washington/Dulles hub.
Each B787-9 Dreamliner flight will carry a range of commodities including general cargo and temperature-controlled goods in the bellyhold, as well as pharmaceuticals and medical supplies manufactured by Ireland-based companies.
“Connecting products to people around the world is the United Cargo mission and that role has never been more crucial than during the current crisis,” said Liz Woolmington, United Cargo Senior Regional Manager – Europe, Middle East, Africa and India.
Globally, United is currently operating more than 180 cargo-only flights per week
United began flying a portion of Boeing 777 and 787 fleet as dedicated cargo charter aircraft to transfer freight to and from US hubs and key international business locations on 19 March 2020.
Said a spokesperson: “With coronavirus (COVID-19) creating an increased need to keep the global supply chain moving, we are utilizing our network capabilities and personnel to get vital shipments, such as medical supplies, kits, PPE, pharmaceuticals and equipment between U.S. hubs to key international destinations.”
Since 19 March 2020:
- Military supplies shipped: 960,213 pounds (435.5 tonnes) of supplies to support military troops
- Military mail shipped: 964,818 pounds (437.6 tonnes)
- Medical equipment shipped: 1,351,323 pounds (613 tonnes)
- Amount of cargo shipped overall:
- 31,583,203 pounds (14,300 tonnes) overall including passenger & cargo-only flights
- Over 12 million pounds (5,500 tonnes) on cargo-only flights
- over 379 cargo-only flights have operated
